Here are a few things that are good to know about the Blue Lagoon before you go.
1) The Northern Light Inn will provide towels to use at the Blue Lagoon. These towels are bright yellow and easy to spot in the locker room crowd. Just remember to bring them back when you're done. Also, the NLI will drive you there and back.
2) When you check in at the Blue Lagoon, you will be given a blue wristband with a sensor disk. This is a vital piece of equipment (more about the wristband later.) You will then be directed to a changing room where you can change into your bathing suit and shower thoroughly. Once you are fresh and clean, go through the locker room to the other side where you will be able to enter the waters of the Blue Lagoon.
3) The Blue Lagoon will provide you with bath gel and there is some conditioner available. You may want to pack your own since the salts in the water really do a number on hair. It doesn't damage hair, but it will create an interesting styling challenge.
4) The wristband is what will lock and unlock your locker. Once you find an open locker, place your stuff inside and then follow the instructions on how to set your locker to open with your wristband. I can't remember if the directions are in English but there are usually a few people around who can help.
5) The wristband can also be used to charge food and drink on your account. You then pay the extra money owed when you turn in your wristband at check out.
6) There is a gift shop on the premises where you can purchase some of their cleansers and other skin products.
7) The water is not from a natural hot spring but is the outflow from the nearby geothermal electricity plant. The heat and hot water you will enjoy at the hotel is all produced at this plant. Sea water is brought to the plant and then sent into the earth's crust to super heat and create steam. This water is then cooled (so we won't boil) and released into the Blue Lagoon full of silica, salt, and other minerals from the earth and sea.
8) Early in the history of the Blue Lagoon some people disappeared/died in the waters. This was before there were safety precautions and more controls over the temperature of the waters. Tobias the Dive Master told us this.
9) Be sure to bring your waterproof camera. Derek and I got some amazing shots of us enjoying these waters. I'm sure you've all seen our photos.
10) The silica mud is considered very healing for some skin conditions like psoriasis and ezcema. It makes a nice exfoliant. Don't use it if you have rosacea.
11) You may want to pack an extra bathing suit just in case you need it.
I think this is enough about the Blue Lagoon for now.
